Everything you need to know about the Wally Cup...
2012 marks the 23nd Annual Wally Cup Hockey Invitational Tournament that began some 26 years ago as a “last game of the year” between Wally's team from Basic Technologies (where he worked) and his father-in-law's team from Buffalo, New York. A modest wager of a couple of cases of beer paid for by the losing team to the winning team was the grand prize. For the first two years the beer ended up in the Buffalo group’s hands. However, in the third year, and to the surprise of all, the Basic boys actually won the game. This caught the Buffalo boys off guard as they did not bring any “prize” with them, so they all chipped in and gave the winners some cash. Sitting around the dressing room and not really all wanting to go out and spend the winnings at the local watering hole, it was decided that the funds be given to the local Easter seals camp, Lakewood, where the sister of one of the player’s had attended.
And thus was born “the cause”.
Lakewood Camp received the funds made by our charity tournaments over the years that it was open. Since the camp's closing, we have been donating the funds to two great "causes", the children's programs run by Community Living and the Uber Youth program. Since we started donating to Community Living in 2005, we have raised and contributed $90,550 as of last year.
We look forward to seeing all the teams come and support us and the children's organizations we donate to this year. Without you we would not be successful in our efforts.
Regards,
The Wally Cup team.
Any good organization is only successful due to the fine
efforts of its people and supporters.
We would like to acknowledge all the efforts of our volunteers who come
out every year and put in countless hours to help. The “front table”
staff, the time-keepers, the runners who handle jerseys and score-sheets,
the teams, and especially the referees who donate their time and help try
and keep this a fun event.
We encourage all to support those businesses that have helped to support
us and “the cause(s)”.
